Description
Résumé : As the author of what was probably the first modern textbook on ster- chemistry (Eliel, Stereochemistry of Carbon Compounds McGraw-Hill, 1962) and the co-author or godfather of three recent texts on the subject (refs.1 3 in theAppendix/Bibliography)itgives me great pleasure that this comprehensiveproblembookonthesubjecthasfinallyappearedinEnglish. Many times over the last 44 years I have been asked where students could find exercise problems to help with the study of the above texts, and the answer has always been that the teachers would have to make up their own problem sets. No longer! Having made up many such problem sets myself, I am well aware that they have been nowhere as extensive (nor usually as comprehensively stimulating)incoveringthesubjectmatter asthisbookis. The 191 problems in this book cover most of the area of stereoch- istry, including nomenclature, stereogenic elements (centers, axes, planes) and their descriptors, symmetry, inorganicstereochemistry, determination of enantiomer excess, conformation of acyclic and cyclic compounds, and more. The answers,in addition to providing solutionsto the problems,f- quently include additional explanations of the underlying principles. The problems are ordered moreorless inorder of increasingdifficulty.(I had a hard timewith some of the problems towardthe end myself!) This should help stimulate and maintain the interest of future pharmacists, pharmacologists and physicians to study these problems, and notjustthat offuturechemists andmolecularbiologists
